What did you do prior to SSCS?

I have homeschooled my own children for 11 years before joining South Sutter. I also worked as a writer, virtual assistant, and realtor before I went back to school for my teaching credential.

How long have you been with SSCS?

I am beginning my 12th year with South Sutter.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Wilton, Ca.

Where did you go to college?

I spent 2 years getting an early childhood education AA at the local Junior College, then a Psychology degree at Ashford Universtity and a Teaching Credential at Rio Solado.

Where do you live?

Wilton, Ca

What areas do you serve for SSCS?

Wilton, Elk Grove, Herald and a few families in other areas.

What do you think is/are the best thing(s) about SSCS?

I believe strongly in choice in Education and the individuality of the student and am proud of that idea as the backbone of South Sutter.

Do (did) you homeschool your kids?

Yes, I have two who have graduated from South Sutter and are currently in college, one is a senior, a tenth grader, eight grader, fifth grader and a kindergartner.

What is your favorite curriculum?

Oh my... I love history and have read all the Joy Hakim US history books to my kids. I love that it leads to many conversations and discussions. I like Mathematical Reasoning, Teaching Textbook, Dave Ramsey Personal Finance, Ivy Kids, Kiwi Crates, Outschool, Williamsburg Academy and many more. I like Great Courses as well to supplement every subject.

What is your favorite read aloud book?

Our family loved reading Little Men and Little Britches last year. Peter Pan and the Starcatchers is a great page turning read aloud.

What is your favorite field trip?

This is another area that is hard to pin down. We've done a field trip almost weekly for six years pre-covid. We loved the de Young Art Museum, swimming through caves at Natural Bridges, touring the Sacramento transfer station, and The Bay Area Model among many others..

What is your area of expertise?

I wrote a book on Field Trips called, "Homeschool Adventures, Learning Through the Power of Field Trips," and have spoken on various philosophies of education as well as setting up your homeschool and working while homeschooling. I was the history chair for two years, as well.

What is your dream summer vacation?

Touring various historical areas on the East Coast or Europe with art museums, a Broadway play and a concert thrown in.

What is your favorite subject to teach?

History, English and an Intra/Inter personal psychology course I'm doing with my kids. And art history. I also love to teach pretty much everything TK/K related (picture books are awesome, second recommendation for Ivy Kids).

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love to spend time with my family, visiting with my friends, tours, country drives, my garden, swimming, Celtic Woman, podcasts and audiobooks. Covid has allowed me to conquer sourdough and many baking, canning and cooking projects.

What is something interesting about yourself that many people might not know?

When I was 16 I left the brick and mortar high school to join a new strange thing with the mission of personalizing learning through a charter school. One of the first things I did when I got my time back was take an apprenticeship at a horse ranch, where I learned to train cutting horses. I also spent long hours at the local library studying education and educational philosophy. I knew I'd homeschool my future kids by the time I was 17, and haven't regretted that decision once.
